Governor's Mansion 2023

Explore Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion

Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion invites students to step into 19th-century Georgia history in this beautifully preserved Greek Revival home, which served as the executive residence from 1839 to 1868. The home was seized by General William T. Sherman in 1864 in his March to the Sea during the Civil War. The Mansion has been restored to its appearance under Governor Howell Cobb. On-site educational programs include guided tours through the mansion’s historic rooms, as well as hands-on activities like scavenger hunts and interacting with authentic historic artifacts. Inside the Legislative Lobby and House Chambers, students can see where Georgia’s early government took shape and leaders gathered to make decisions that influenced the state’s future. This immersive experience brings textbook lessons to life, connecting students directly to the people and places that shaped Georgia’s history.

Andalusia-clay-2023

Explore Literary Heritage at Andalusia Farm

Andalusia Farm is the home of Flannery O’Connor, the notable Southern Gothic writer. The one-hour guided tour shows her home, still furnished with original items that belonged to Flannery and her mother, Regina. Students will learn about Flannery’s life on the farm, see the room where she wrote many of her works, and understand more about her struggles with lupus. The property is owned and cared for by Georgia College & State University, which in recent years has opened the Andalusia Interpretive Center. The center, which is on the same property, exhibits the recently publicized artwork of Flannery, personal items belonging to the O’Connor family, and artifacts of those who inhabited the land prior to the O’Connors.
