Lockerly Arboretum
Founded in 1965, by Mr. E. J. Grassmann, Lockerly Arboretum boasts 50 acres of shrubs, trees, rhododendrons, a conifer collection, and an extensive camellia collection. The greenhouses are used for educational programs and in 2016, one greenhouse was expanded to include tropical plants. The grounds are free and open to the public Monday-Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Individuals are welcome to visit and enjoy a self-guided tour at their own pace.
The centerpiece of Lockerly is Rose Hill, a National Register, Greek Revival style home built in 1852 by Daniel R. Tucker. The name Rose Hill was chosen because of the abundance of Cherokee Roses that grew on the site.
Visitors can walk the trails, bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the tables near the pond, watch birds and wildlife, and explore the mansion. Self-guided Rose Hill tours are $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children and free for veterans. Coordinated group tour pricing is available; please call for rates. All dogs must be kept on a leash and owners are asked to clean up after their pets.
