MILLEDGEVILLE WINS GREAT AMERICAN MAIN STREET AWARD
Milledgeville, GA- Congratulations are in order for Milledgeville, GA on receiving a prestigious 2014 Great American Main Street Award. This nationwide award recognizes Milledgeville as one of the finest downtown areas in America.
On Sunday, May 18 Milledgeville Main Street was named a recipient of the most prominent award given by the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as a Great American Main Street. Communities that demonstrate exemplary achievement in the process of strengthening their downtowns and commercial districts receive this distinguished award. Milledgeville will join only two other communities in Georgia which serve as models for comprehensive, preservation- based Comerica district revitalization.
The seven member jury that was comprised of nationally recognized Main Street specialists made the decision based on the strength of Milledgeville's local program in creating an exciting place to live, work, play and visit.
"For Milledgeville Main Street to be recognized as a national model for the comprehensive revitalization of our historic downtown is an honor," says Carlee Schulte, director of Milledgeville Main Street. "Becoming a Great American Main Street will surely promote tourism and economic development for the area. The recognition this national award will bring to our City will be extremely valuable for continued success and enthusiasm of the program."
Milledgeville was named a Great American Main Street city because of the people who live, work and invest themselves here. Join in a Hometown Celebration to give thanks to our leaders and to those in our community who continue to support local business by shopping and dining in Milledgeville. The Hometown Celebration will be held on August 15, 2014 on North Columbia Street.
The mission of Milledgeville Main Street is to inspire public and private investment in the revitalization, preservation, and promotion of the downtown business district in order to strengthen the economic base of Milledgeville-Baldwin County.
