Historic District

ABOUT

ABOUT

Founded in 1803, Milledgeville was carefully planned with wide streets and public squares, built to serve as Georgia’s new capital city. For over six decades, it fulfilled that role, bearing witness to pivotal chapters in the state’s history. Many of its antebellum homes and buildings still stand today as landmarks. A walk, drive, or ride through Milledgeville’s historic district reveals a tapestry of architecture and heritage. Along Clarke, Liberty, and Greene Streets, stately homes line the shaded sidewalks, each with its own story to tell. Hancock Street runs through the heart of town, where you’ll pass Georgia College & State University—founded in 1889 and now a vibrant center of learning that counts celebrated writer Flannery O’Connor among its alumni. Just steps away, Statehouse Square is home to Georgia Military College, a preparatory school and junior college uniquely housed in Georgia’s Old Capitol Building. The Gothic Revival structure served as the state’s seat of government from 1807 to 1868 and remains one of Milledgeville’s most iconic buildings. Anchoring all of this is Milledgeville’s walkable downtown, where you’ll find historic storefronts, the classic Campus Theatre marquee, and layers of history waiting to be explored.
