In approximately 1940 it was determined that Milledgeville needed an African American cemetery. Russell G. Bone, who Bone Cemetery is named for, began the cemetery and his family sold the lots until all were acquired. There are approximately 1,750 graves in the cemetery. The city currently mows and generally maintains the cemetery. Burials of special note include Sallie Ellis Davis (Row H, Lot 8 Grave 1).
