🏥 Central State Hospital Trolley Tour

Since its founding in 1842, the Central State Hospital Campus has been one of Milledgeville’s most fascinating and historically significant landmarks. Once home to the largest mental institution in the U.S. during the 1960s, Central State Hospital housed over 12,000 patients, employed 6,000 people, and spanned 8,000 acres of land. Today, the campus continues its legacy, serving around 200 patients on 2,000 acres of property.

Led by a former hospital employee, this two-hour guided tour offers a deep dive into the institution’s complex history, its evolving role in patient care, and the ongoing redevelopment efforts shaping the future of the site. Highlights include visits to Cedar Lane Cemetery and the Chapel of All Faiths (when accessible), each stop offering a look into the campus’s past.
