2025 marks the 100th birthday of Flannery O'Connor, one of the most influential figures in American literature. Born on March 25th, 1925, O'Connor spent much of her life in Milledgeville, Georgia, at Andalusia Farm, her family home. Despite battling lupus, she crafted a body of work that continues to captivate readers with its complex characters, and profound narratives. Known for her exploration of morality, faith, and social dynamics, O'Connor’s legacy endures through her novels, and short stories, which remain cornerstones of Southern Gothic literature.
To honor this milestone, Georgia College & State University, O’Connor’s alma mater, will host a week of events to celebrate the writer’s life, work, and artistic influence. The festivities begin on March 24th with a Singer-Songwriter Workshop with Sally Jaye, where aspiring musicians will draw inspiration from O’Connor’s themes and storytelling techniques. On March 25th, Andalusia will celebrate O’Connor’s birthday with free tours of Andalusia all day, as well as cake and the singing of “Happy Birthday.” Plus, explore the Hidden Treasures exhibit, which displays artifacts from O’Connor’s life that have never been publicly shown.
Dive deeper into the unique perspectives of O’Connor’s work with additional events on March 25th. Acclaimed illustrator Ping Zhu will present a book reading, sharing insights into visual interpretations of her stories. Savannah-based folk artist, Panhandle Slim, will showcase his art inspired by O’Connor’s life and writings. The celebration continues on March 26th with Flannery the Visual Artist Gallery & Lecture, which highlights her recently discovered artwork, offering a deeper look into her creative outlets beyond the written word.
Music and performance will also play a key role in the festivities. On March 27th, singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins will take the stage for a special concert honoring O'Connor’s literary and cultural impact. Fans can look forward to the Wildcat Film Panel & Screening on March 28th, offering a viewing of Ethan Hawke’s cinematic interpretation of O’Connor’s personal life and literary works. The Andalusia Music Festival will bring live performances to O'Connor's former home, creating an atmosphere of celebration in the very place that inspired much of her work.
Concluding the weeklong celebration on March 29th, the 100th Birthday Celebration will bring together fans, scholars, and artists for a final tribute to her enduring legacy. Explore the grounds that inspired O'Connor's iconic works and immerse yourself in her world through free guided tours of Andalusia Farm. Local food trucks will offer a variety of delicious options, and birthday cake will be served as a tribute to her remarkable life.
