Milledgeville tourism is on the rise!
Milledgeville, GA...December 15, 2010...Recession? What recession? This is a question that the staff with the Milledgeville Convention & Visitors Bureau has been asking themselves after receiving a report on the economic significance of tourism in Milledgeville and Baldwin County.
Based on 2009 statistics, visitors to Milledgeville generated $58.83 million in direct tourist spending which in turn produced $13.01 million in workers income and paychecks as well as created $1.80 million in local tax revenues. This abundance in revenue created 690 jobs in Baldwin County as well as allowed each household to spend $205 less in local and state taxes!
On an average day in 2009, tourist spending in Milledgeville created $4,931in local tax revenue and $6,219 in state tax revenue - all in one day! A three-year trend in tourist spending for Milledgeville-Baldwin County shows that from 2008 to 2009 our numbers only fell 5.8% from the previous year. However, when compared to the state's average of - 7.6%, Milledgeville was less affected by the recession than most other counties.
In addition to the uplifting news that tourism is on the rise, the Milledgeville CVB was also recently awarded Best Marketing Campaign from the Historic Heartland Travel Association for their Mobile Treasure Hunt. This mobile campaign was held during the month of October and featured a "scavenger hunt" throughout Milledgeville complete with clues and treasures. The CVB was thrilled to be recognized by such a remarkable organization and was in good company with other nominees such as the Athens-Clarke County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Macon CVB and the Madison Chamber of Commerce.
