African American Heritage Tour

As the Antebellum Capital of Georgia, historic Milledgeville boasts of southern mansions and garden gates which have harbored governors, generals and ghosts.
Come and make a date with destiny!

Morning:
Begin your day with a guided trolley tour of the Historic District. The tour includes rotating stops at Lockerly Hall, the Old State Capitol, St. Stephens Episcopal Church, and the Stetson-Sanford House. (Tour stops vary daily).  Then enjoy lunch in one of our unique downtown restaurants!

Afternoon:
After your relaxing lunch and stroll, you may tour the sites that feature Milledgeville's African-American heritage. Every year in August, one of Milledgeville's oldest neighborhoods, the Bottom, hosts the Hamp Brown Bottom Festival. Named for the former farmer, landlord and minister Hamp Brown, the festival features local arts, crafts and music.

If your group is interested in history, Memory Hill Cemetery is the resting place for many notable African-Americans of our community including the Rev. Wilkes Flagg and Dr. Benjamin J. Simmons. The cemetery also includes a special section where African-American slaves were buried. Then head over to Trinity CME Church, which was established in the early 1870's. The original building was located near the Memory Hill Cemetery entrance. The church now resides on Wilkinson Street and was built in the 1920's.

Evening:
Visit Flagg Chapel Baptist Church, which was believed to have been constructed c. 1845 and was one of the first black churches. Rev. Wilkes Flagg, a former slave who purchased his freedom, guided the organization of the church and served as its pastor for the first 28 years. Finish off your day with a historic walking tour of Milledgeville's homes or a picnic on the front campus of Georgia College & State University.
